The company was formed through the merger of Líftryggingarfélag Sjóvár hf. and Líftryggingamiðstöðin hf.
In 1989, the Life Insurance portfolios of Almennar líftryggingar hf. and Líftryggingarfélag Varðar hf. were transferred to the company, and its market share has remained between 30% and 35% in recent years.
