Our Story

Sjóvátryggingafélag Íslands was founded in 1918. At the time, people had long felt the absence of a domestic general insurance company in Iceland, as only branch offices of foreign companies operated in the country. The establishment of Sjóvá marked the first step in running an independent, domestic insurance corporation, with the belief that this would better meet customer needs and provide improved service.

Sjóvá traces its roots back to this company and to Almennar Tryggingar, founded in 1943. These two companies merged to form Sjóvá-Almennar Tryggingar in 1989. A new company was then established in 2009, building on the foundation of the merged entities, and is commonly referred to as Sjóvá.

Although much has changed since the early years, the core of the company’s operations remains the same. Sjóvá’s mission is to safeguard what matters most in people’s lives and to be a dependable support for individuals and businesses in times of need. We fulfill this role with fairness and care by maintaining strong, continuous communication with our customers and keeping a close eye on societal changes.

With a dedicated workforce committed to providing excellent service and a clear vision, we have significantly increased customer trust and satisfaction in recent years. We continue to work toward our future goals, offering services that build trust and peace of mind for our customers.
