A new year has begun, and although many of us look forward with hope for brighter days, we are accustomed to enduring the hardships of winter. Unfortunately, disasters have already struck at the beginning of the year, most notably the volcanic eruptions in and around Grindavík. Traffic incidents have also taken their toll. So far this year, five people have lost their lives in traffic accidents within an eleven-day period. Never before have so many fatalities occurred in traffic during the early days of the year since records began.
Road conditions can be challenging during this time of year, with significant ice in many parts of the country. When poor driving conditions and traffic disruptions are expected, it’s important to allow sufficient time to clear snow from vehicles, scrape windows, and ensure all lights on the car are working. Leaving earlier—or even later than usual (depending on circumstances)—can help avoid delays and reduce congestion. It’s also wise to be well-prepared, dress warmly, and keep tools like a shovel and scraper handy. Adjusting speed appropriately, maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, and driving according to the conditions are crucial.
It’s essential to ensure vehicles are in good condition and tires are suitable. High-quality tires are especially critical when winter conditions prevail. Check tire pressure regularly, as it can drop significantly in cold weather. Driving with improper pressure reduces safety, particularly in wet or icy conditions. Inspect tires frequently to ensure adequate tread depth, even wear, and overall good condition. Winter driving can be highly demanding, and road conditions can change rapidly, so it’s vital to have all driving equipment in good working order when needed.
Icelandic weather is unpredictable, and road conditions can change quickly. The Safetravel app provides real-time information about road conditions in both Icelandic and English. It’s an excellent tool to recommend to visiting tourists. Travelers can also receive alerts and warnings via text messages by registering at safetravel.is. The app allows you to send your GPS location to 112 if you’re hiking in remote areas and encounter difficulties, simplifying rescue operations and speeding up assistance. The app is easy to download from either Google Play or the App Store.
Although traffic fatalities have significantly decreased over recent decades, the tragic events of recent days are a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant. Funded traffic safety plans as part of a four-year transportation strategy have positively impacted reducing accidents, but traffic safety is a collective responsibility requiring constant awareness. Let’s be cautious in traffic, show consideration for other road users, and take a few extra seconds to assess the situation rather than take risks. Those few seconds can make all the difference.
