Cyclist Safety

Cycling is enjoying growing popularity both as a sport and a mode of transportation. Increased awareness and education about cycling safety can reduce accidents and enhance the overall cycling experience. Several safety considerations should be taken into account before setting off.

Bicycle Helmet

  • Always wear a bicycle helmet that meets recognized safety standards.
  • Helmet use is mandatory for children under 16, as per traffic law no. 77/2019, effective January 1, 2020.

Visible Clothing

Wear bright colors or reflective materials to improve visibility in traffic, especially in the dark or poor weather conditions.

Proper Bicycle Size

Ensure that the bicycle is the correct size and in good condition, with properly inflated tires and well-adjusted brakes.

Maintenance and Equipment

  • Perform regular maintenance on the bike, including brakes, chain, and lights.
  • Equip your bike with good front and rear lights.
  • Use a bell to alert others to your presence.
  • Carry emergency equipment, such as a small toolkit with a spare tube and pump, for minor repairs.

Cycling Routes

  • Choose safe routes, preferably bike paths or lanes designated for cyclists when available.
  • If a bike path runs alongside a sidewalk or pedestrian path, use the bike path as a rule.
  • Cycling on sidewalks or pedestrian paths is only allowed at a speed comparable to walking.
  • In organized group rides, cycling in groups can increase visibility and safety.

Smart Devices

Traffic laws include provisions regarding smart devices, explicitly prohibiting their use while cycling. According to Article 57 of the traffic law, cyclists are not allowed to use smart devices while riding.

Mind the Gap!

  • When overtaking a bicycle or light motorcycle, a minimum lateral distance of 1.5 meters must be maintained, as stated in Article 23 of the traffic law: “A driver overtaking another vehicle must maintain a sufficient lateral distance between their vehicle and the one being overtaken. When overtaking a bicycle or light motorcycle, the lateral distance must be at least 1.5 meters.”
  • Drivers must yield to cyclists when crossing a bike lane; a driver turning across a bike lane must give priority to cyclists traveling in the lane.
